Turbo Actuators

All modern day turbo chargers are controlled by an electronic actuator, this actuator will control the variable vanes inside the turbo charger via a small operating rod. It seems that more manufactures are switching to electronic actuator operated turbos control of boost pressure, but like all electronic devices they can fail from time to time. Bmw turbo actuators and Mercedes turbo actuators are the more common failures but we have seen an increase in Ford turbo actuator problems and Jeep Grand Cherokee turbo actuators.

Lets look at symptoms of failure of a turbo actuator, the first would be a complete loss of power and possibly a flashing engine management light, what has happened here is that the turbo actuator has failed to open the variable vanes in the turbo under acceleration there for the turbo has failed to spin up to normal operating pressure. Before you call us wanting to purchase a turbo actuator for you Bmw or Mercedes it would be wise to determine if the turbo has failed or the turbo actuator has failed, so we have put together a simple test you can carry out to determine which is at fault.

How to test your turbo actuator. Unbolt the electronic actuator from the turbo set it to one side but keep it plugged in, get an assistant to sit inside the vehicle ready to rev it flat out for a few seconds. Find the main pressure pipe coming off the turbo and get another assistant to squeeze it hard, get your finger and thumb on the operating rod on the turbo which would connect to the electronic actuator, then signal the assistant inside the vehicle to rev it to the floor for a few seconds. At the same time move the operating rod to the middle of its travel. If the assistant squeezing the pipe reports a large expansion of the pipe then the turbo is working fine and the turbo actuator has failed, if there is no expansion of the pipe then it is possible the turbo has failed.
